What is Sex Therapy?

Sex therapy is a specialty within the mental health and counseling field that focuses on helping clients with problems and concerns around human sexuality, sexuality and relationships, and intimacy.

Sex therapists are specially trained professionals who are qualified to help you with your sexual health and intimacy or relationship concerns. They are licensed mental health professionals with a masters degree in a counseling or mental health related field.  A sex therapist may have one or more of the following mental health licenses: Licensed Professional Counselor,  Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

In addition to their mental health license and training most sex therapists also have additional training and certification in human sexuality and sex therapy.  Organizations such as the the American Society of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (ASSECT) provide continuing education and professional certification for professionals wishing to specialize in sex therapy and sex education.

Sex therapists do not have sex with their clients.

Why Talk About Sex?

The topics of sex and sexuality are often considered taboo, and most of us do not grow up with positive associations on the topic.  We are given cultural and societal messages that sex is something dirty, shameful, or dangerous.  As a result we never acquire a real education in this arena.  It is assumed that we are to figure it out on our own or worse, to learn from media.  Rarely are we ever taught that our human sexuality can be something truly beautiful and natural, something to be cherished  and experienced as a path to spiritual understanding and deep physical and emotional healing.
